Under the Bridge is an arts and culture publication compiled and authored by the faculty and students of Trinity Christian College composed of essays, short stories, poetry, play scripts et all.
Under the Bridge was once Trinity's Student-run newspaper, though in recent years, its circulation has declined. As a response, the team decided to publish a journal bi-annually, leaving design to students of the English department. This solution still fell on hard readership times, and as such, the project needed a new look, and to be rethought as a circulating accumulation of student writings at Trinity.
First, Pen and Lens Design changed the circulation to once per year, aligning the launch of the publication with the college's largest event celebrating student academic achievement. This allowed us to consolidate both budget and student writings to correspond with the academic year. Second, though the publication is only lightly edited, we treated the content as if it had made it through a series of judging panels to heighten the experience and presentation.
The final publication houses speeches, poems, theatrical scripts, poems, recipes, and short essays. As such, a tight typographic grid was established which allowed for these varying types of content to effortlessly fill the pages of the first annual Under the Bridge.
"The moon looks wonderful in this warm evening light, just as a candle flame looks beautiful in the light of morning. Light within light...It seems to me to be a metaphor for the human soul, the singular light within that great general light of existence.” —Marilynne Robinson
